Viewing profiles: white- and blacklisting viewers based on domain, country, IP address
Viewing profiles allow you to limit the accessibility of an item, playlist or event through Clevercast player. By creating a custom viewing profile, you can whitelist and blacklist viewers based on their IP address and country and/or based on the domain on which the player is embedded.
Creating a viewing profile
By default, your account has a single viewing profile named 'Public', which instructs the player not to limit access. This built-in viewing profile can not be modified or deleted.
To create a new viewing profile, select 'Media' > 'Viewing Profiles' in the top menu. By pressing ‘Create New’ and editing the profile settings, you determine which access restrictions will be applied by Clevercast player when this viewing profile is selected (for an item or event).
Whitelist and blacklist
A viewing profile may include constraints on IP address, country and domain:
- 'Any': no constraints
- ‘Listed only’: only viewers who meet the condition can watch the stream in the embedded player (= whitelisting)
- ‘Any, except listed’: viewers who meet the condition can not watch the stream in the embedded player (= blacklisting)
Multiple constraints (on IP address, country, domain) can be combined in one viewing profile.
IP address
- By whitelisting one or more IP addresses, you ensure that only viewers with these IP addresses can watch the stream in the embedded player.
- By blacklisting one or more IP addresses, you ensure that viewers with these IP addresses can't watch the stream in the embedded player.
Country
- By whitelisting one or more countries, you ensure that only viewers in those countries can watch the stream in the embedded player.
- By blacklisting one or more countries, you ensure that viewers in those countries can't watch the stream in the embedded player.
Domain
This lets you determine on which domains the player may be embedded.
- By whitelisting one or more domains, you ensure that the embedded player will only play on those domains.
- By blacklisting one or more domains, you ensure that the embedded player will not play on those domains.
Selecting a viewing profile
To apply a viewing profile for a VoD and/or live stream, you must select it for the corresponding item (VoD) and/or event (live).
Item
Go the Item detail page and select the 'Viewing profile' in the 'Metadata' panel.
Alternatively, you can apply a viewing profile to multiple items, by going to the Items listing page ('Media' > 'Items'). In the list, select all items to be changed. In the left-side menu, press 'Set Viewing Profile' and choose the viewing profile.
Event
Go the 'Appearance' tab of the Event detail page and select the 'Viewing profile' in the 'Settings' panel.
Alternatively, you can apply a viewing profile to multiple events, by going to the Events listing page ('Media' > 'Events'). In the list, select all events to be changed. In the left-side menu, press 'Set Viewing Profile' and choose the viewing profile.
Player behaviour
When a viewer visits a page with the embedded player, Clevercast will first verify that the item/event in the embed code is accessible. If not, the player will show a black screen with an error message.
